Public Speaking

A popular public speaker in the Bay Area on two fronts, that of her own personal success story in overcoming the hurdles of getting ahead in a foreign culture as well as her acumen, especially in sales & marketing and team building. Ms. Terry has become a model for all entrepreneurs, especially minorities.

Education

In Korea, Jinsoo attained a Masters Degree in Engineering-Textile Manufacturing and, at the age of 28, was promoted to be in charge of Research and Development of one of the nation's largest yarn-dyeing companies. This youthful accomplishment was even more remarkable, considering the male-dominated business enivironment. At the same time, Jinsoo began pursuing her PhD in order to become one of Korea's best engineers. This confirmed Jinsoo's underlying philosophy in life: "Nothing is impossible. I, Jinsoo Terry, will succeed."

Immigration to America

She brought this firm belief with her when she immigrated to America in 1985. Following her American husband, Sam Terry, to Berkeley, California, Jinsoo began with low-paying restaurant work, the only available, until she improved her English and understood how business was transacted in America. Immediately, Jinsoo realized that people overlooked education and ambition in the U.S. if one couldn't communicate. Communication skills were essential.

Toastmasters International

Through Toastmasters International, a recognized communication/leadership skills-building organization, Jinsoo discovered the vehicle she needed to place herself in a viable position as an advocate for the second-language citizen.

Rhinoceros Toastmasters Business Club

In 1998, Ms. Terry founded her own Toastmasters Club that focused on business networking in the San Francisco Bay Area and pitched her new club to many minorities. Her new Rhinoceros Toastmasters Business Club, took as its motto, "Charge Ahead," an apt slogan for both the club and Jinsoo. Always working on improving her own English, Jinsoo quickly became an inspiration for the multi-cultural communities in the Bay Area. The Rhinoceros Club served as a venue for many aspiring entrepreneurs to test their ideas, and launch their products and services in a supportive environment.

The Rhinoceros Club, now in its fourth year, is the foremost Toastmasters Club in San Francisco. It has launched numerous networking events including Pacific Rim Night (last held on May 22, 2001) and CEO Night (last held on November 3, 2001). These were, in essence, business network opportunities and educational forums on how America conducts business. Its membership is a roster of Bay Area leaders and includes the Deputy Director of SBA in San Francisco, the Director of Small Business Affairs of the San Francisco Mayor's Office, the Deputy Director of the Taiwanese Tourist Bureau, along with many small business owners. Ms. Terry firmly believes that success is an attitude. She is currently Director of Manufacturing at Cut Loose Corporation, a women's fashion apparel company that produces exclusively in the US. This US-based manufacturer engages an immigrant workforce, and Ms. Terry's skills in team-building and creative problem-solving catapulted the company revenues.

In partnership with the Chinese Garment Contractors Association, Jinsoo is constantly seeking ways to connect different business philosophies and business environments. She is on the Board of Directors at Garment 2000 and organizes seminars for business skills-building.

Success Builders International

Success Builder International (SBI) was co-founded by Ms. Terry in 2001. Located in Silicon Valley, SBI is a non-profit organization for personal development, offering a supportive, non-competitive environment where members can achieve their goals and continuously improve their leadership, communication, and human relations skills.

Newspaper Columnist

As a community builder, Jinsoo recognizes that there are many ways to reach people and connect them. She currently writes a weekly column for The Korea Times, the largest Korean-American newspaper in the U.S. The column focuses on "How to succeed in the USA for anyone whose English is their second-language." Topics range from building a mastermind group, using humor in public speaking, how to communicate with Americans, time management, how to network, and how to be confident. The success of her column garnered for her the title "Most Influential Korean-American of the Month." (Read some of her columns here.)

In recognition for her outstanding contributions in the minority business community of San Francisco, Willie L. Brown, Jr., the Mayor of San Francisco, issued a proclamation stating that July 10, 2001 was Jinsoo Terry Day.
