Let’s go over some Concepts.

The first concept is known as the Rule of 250.

It’s simple: the average person knows about 250 people. Some know more, some know fewer. But the average person knows about 250 people. Maybe you're saying, I don’t know 250 people. But if you sit down and write down all the family members you have, all the people you have met during school, all the people you have met while working, all the people you have done business with (including the cashier at the corner grocer), the people in your clubs, and so on – I’ll bet you’ll come up with 250 people easily.

Now, the average person doesn’t work hard at meeting new people. They come across new people during work and in social gatherings. But they’re not focusing on meeting new people. But there are those who focus on meeting new people.

We’ll call them MegaNetworkers. If the average person knows 250 people, guess how many the average MegaNetworker knows? Any guesses?  3500 people. That’s right, 3500 people. Fourteen times as many as the average person. That's why you'll focus on Meganetworkers. Not those who know 250.

The second concept is known as the 6 Degrees of Separation.

Simply, you can contact anyone (living, that is) by no more than 6 people from you to them. You contact the 2nd who contacts the 3rd who contacts the 4th who contacts the 5th who contacts the 6th. Each person already knows the person they contact. Perhaps you want to meet George W. Bush and politely share your thoughts on California’s energy situation. You tap into your network and find your college friend has a friend who works for the City of San Francisco. That city worker has a lunch friend who worked as a campaign volunteer. The campaign volunteer knows the head of California’s Republican Party. And that Republican party leader knows George W. In this example, you have 5 degrees and the opportunity to sit down with the President.

You---> your friend---> city worker---> campaign volunteer---> party head---> George W. Bush

The final concept is known as the 80/20 Rule.
Simply, 80% of your results will come from 20% of the people you contact. You want to make sure you’re focusing your time and effort on the right people. The MegaNetworkers.

So, we have the Rule of 250, the 6 Degrees of Separation, and the 80/20 Rule.

What do these mean? Simple. It means you focus on the MegaNetworkers, those who are more connected.
