Now, let's set some Rules to keep you focused.
|
| 1. Choose quality, not quantity. |
- Character. Is a person honest? Tell the truth? Keep his or her word? Have positive energy and outlook?
- Involvement and Connectedness. Does this person work at meeting new people? Take on new responsibilities?
- Willingness to help. Does this person offer help without being asked? Receive and accept requests for help often?
|
| 2. Follow up and keep in touch. |
| Remember the 80/20
Rule? Eighty percent of people don't follow up and keep in touch! But MegaNetworkers do! Because they know that most people don't follow up. And so the MegaNetworkers
easily have the advantage!
In the George W. Bush example we used to illustrate 6 Degrees of
Separation, you were put in contact with a number of people. You want them to be part of those you know directly. So, when your friend introduces you to her city work friend, stay in contact. Sometimes you’ll get the connection to the next person, the campaign volunteer, right away. Sometimes it takes time. Allow time to work for you by staying in touch.
|
| 3. Maintain visibility. |
| If you were sit down and test the Rule of 250 on yourself by writing down who you know, you’d find a lot of people on your list are those who you’ve had some recent contact with. Very few of those you haven’t had recent contact with are going to be on your list – you can’t remember them! And if you added to each name on the list their line of work, you’d have even fewer people. You want to know what these people do. You want them to know what you do. And you want the information to be current.
Now ask yourself, How many people out there would write your name on their list? Or know what you do?
Okay, what do we actually do to maintain our visibility? We’ll next talk about some specific Actions you can take to meet new people and maintain your visibility in front of these new people and those you already know.
