List of One Hundred

The beginning of a new year is frequently the time for many people to make resolutions. After years of doing this very thing myself, I found that I broke my resolutions almost as quickly as I made them. A few years ago I came across a new way to celebrate the beginning of a new year --- my List of 100.

My List of 100 consists of things that I want to do or accomplish in my lifetime. Some of them will occur during the course of this year, others are a little farther out on the horizon. There are things I want to do and places I want to go; skills I want to learn and people I want to meet; new things to try and goals to strive for. Some of the things on my list are wild and daring, others more circumspect. Some things are fun, others practical. All in all it’s a potpourri of stuff that I’d like to do during my lifetime.

In mid-January I review my List of 100. This year, I found that there were a few things that I can cross off my list. I’ve accomplished or experienced those things, and in most cases have photos, souvenirs, and wonderful memories of it all. For example: start a new corporate Toastmaster club (I was actually involved with starting three corporate clubs), attend a Major League Baseball All-Star Game (my husband and I attended the All-Star Week events in Seattle), pet a lion cub (at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas), and visit someplace new (Manzanillo, Mexico). By the way, visiting some place new every year is one of my annual goals!

Here are some items still on my List:

  • visit someplace new
  • attend a World Series game
  • learn Italian
  • perfect making a souffle?
  • read at least one book per week, and
  • be elected an International Director.

Now it’s time to revise and add to my List of 100. Why don’t you join me in this exercise? Here are a few ideas to get you started: Places to go, professional goals, things to acquire, hobbies, family, dreams, things to see, services to perform, skills to learn, fears to conquer, books to read, events to attend, people to meet, subjects to study, awards to strive for, organizations to join and/or support, and thrills to embrace.

I think you’ll find that this process is a wonderful way to identify your life priorities, as well as challenge your creativity. It can bring focus to your goals and leadership style. It’s fun. And, perhaps most importantly, it helps keeps balance in your life. No one has to know what’s on your list --- unless you choose to share it. And if you do choose to share that list, I’d love to know about some of the things you’re dreaming for the future.

Do you have a good List for Life? Let me know, and perhaps it might be something someone else needs!
