The Lasting Perks of Service

This leadership article is reprinted, with permission, from Cynthia D’Amour.

The week before the annual recruitment campaign, Jeanette, the Membership VP, received five cards wishing the Membership Team great success.

Karl chaired a social event for the chapter. Everyone had a blast. Over the course of the next week, he received five thank you notes -- one even included a few photos.

When Pat's husband went in the hospital, a lovely bouquet of flowers arrived wishing her well.

The chapter was buzzing about the cards and flowers. What was going on? Who was sending the cards and flowers?

The cards and flowers were obviously from chapter members -- but always signed in some anonymous way such as "Chapter Members Who Care" or "Proud to be in Your Chapter".

As the months went on, the cards continued to arrive. They went not only to official chapter leaders -- but also to members who helped out the chapter in unofficial leadership ways as well.

The chapter's mood soared, as more members felt really appreciated for their efforts.

Two months after Heidi completed her term as president she received an invitation to attend the Past President's Council Meeting.

The Past President's Council was quite a prestigious group to spend time with -- no one was allowed to attend except Past Presidents. It was one of the lasting perks of serving as chapter president.

A few minutes into the Past President's Council meeting, Heidi, as a new member of the Council, was asked to take an oath of secrecy -- she was never to expose what took place at their meetings.

Heidi couldn't wait to learn what the big secret was that demanded such an oath.

With a big flourish of seriousness, the Council Chair ceremoniously lifted a velvet cloth off a big box of note cards!

The Past President's Council members were the secret admirers who had been steadily sending notes of appreciation and support to the chapter!

The Council had been concerned about the chapter's mood and decided to work together to make a difference -- and there were also benefits to Council members.

Being a "spy" at the meeting to catch good deeds in action added some excitement to their attendance -- plus, it was a blast for them to hear members trying to figure out exactly who was sending the cards.

What do your Presidents do once their term of office is done?

Leadership Challenge for the Week:
Wouldn’t this be a wonderful concept for all leaders to embrace, instead of being critical when things aren’t being done the way WE did it? Send out two thank you messages this week. And the week after. And the week after that. Let me know if it makes a difference.
